‘Waves’ an Installation

March 8th, 2011 by mattbudelman

I love the references to electronic sine waves both in sound and image. Neat installation. I also like the distortion that happens when someone is behind the waves.

Waves from Daniel Palacios on Vimeo.

‘Waves’ utilizes a basic construction of a long piece of elastic string and two motors to visualize the presence of people close to the installation. The string between the two motorized chambers reacts to the people presence and movements, it twirls to produce a sine-wave simulation that eloquently resembles both the digitization of real-time sound waves and patterns of flow and connectivity found in natural systems.

The simple act of making the “invisible” visible can produce profound effects in both our understanding of the world around us and the close relationship we have to the natural and built environment that we occupy daily. Although the project may seem like a simple visualization of intangible forms, it nevertheless connects to our visceral side by creating unique sound output and striking visual stimuli that engage with “persistence of vision” and our connection to the spaces we occupy and their sonic and electromagnetic inhabitants.

The Greatest Art Critique Ever

March 3rd, 2011 by mattbudelman

I wish I took classes with this guy. That would have upped my game so much. It definitely would have weeded out the people who don’t belong. Every graphic design department needs a Roland Young. Enjoy.

Unlearn Your MBA

February 24th, 2011 by mattbudelman

If you are an Entrepreneur—or have thoughts of starting your own business—definitely watch the first 30 minutes of this insightful talk. The talk was given by David Heineimeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails and partner at 37signals in Chicago.

In summary, he says that planning is guessing, and for a start-up, the focus must be on today and not on tomorrow. He argues that constraints—fiscal, temporal, or otherwise—drive innovation and effective problem-solving. The most important thing, Hansson believes, is to make a dent in the universe with your company.

John Maeda’s Inauguration Speech as President of RISD 2008

October 4th, 2010 by mattbudelman

I wanted to share this video because of how jam-packed it is with inspiration and nuggets of knowledge. John’s call-to-action for the entire school is both inspiring and daunting, however, in his speech he makes it feel welcoming and possible. I hope that you can take the time to listen and possibly be inspired by this speech.

How to fake HDR shots in Photoshop

July 23rd, 2010 by mattbudelman

I just found out about deke and his Blog/Website. It is a treasure trove of quality tutorials for a lot fo Adobe products, and specifically, Photoshop. I found his site looking for a way to take a simple portrait and fake it into a HDR photo. This is probably useful for graphic designers & illustrators who don’t have access to shoot their own group of photos to get the true effect of HDR (High Dynamic Range) shots. I needed to use it on a current project and since I see a lot of these type of images around the internet I thought it might be of service to someone out there.

Note: Use this technique judiciously, its not appropriate for every photo.

If you liked this, you can visit his site for more here… http://www.deke.com/

My friend Jason Stevens, who runs the Blog DesignIsMyThing™, is launching a poster contest called the Say Something Poster Project. This will be a vehicle for local and national designers & artists to get exposure, but also help inspire future generations of kids. You can follow what he is up to on Facebook. I am excited to be a part of getting the project started and I can’t wait to enter in my design. I encourage everyone to enter a design because it will be a great chance to get exposure for your artwork and your name. The teaser video is below. I will be posting more about this as the event and competition approaches.
